PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a large KTaO<SB>3</SB>single crystal having no crack or scatterer inside and no coloration or distortion, and its preparation method. SOLUTION: The KTaO<SB>3</SB>single crystal has a density of≥7.00 g/cm<SP>3</SP>and is prepared through a self-flux method using highly pure K<SB>2</SB>CO<SB>3</SB>and Ta<SB>2</SB>O<SB>5</SB>as raw materials. In the preparation method, a starting composition having a ratio of K<SB>2</SB>CO<SB>3</SB>to Ta<SB>2</SB>O<SB>5</SB>(K/(K+Ta)) of 53-65% is melted, and cooling rate at an elevated temperature after melting is controlled at≤2°C/hr.
