PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device dispensing with a switch for turning on/off the automatic focusing device in the midst of using an electronic endoscope, and also, preventing unnecessary automatic focusing operation. SOLUTION: The automatic focusing device is provided with an image pickup optical system 3 including a focusing movable lens system 3b and an imaging device 3c for converting an optical image formed by the image pickup optical system 3 to an electrical image signal, and also, the device is also provided with a system controller 11 for separating a luminance signal from the image signal outputted from the imaging device 3c, calculating an optical flow based on the luminance signals in former and latter pictures, summing the size of each optical flow, and deciding whether the movable lens system 3b should be driven based on the size of the summed optical flow.
