PURPOSE: A method for controlling electronic dictionary retrieval of an optical disk reproduction device is provided to retrieve explanations on all words of caption sections relative to a selected reproduction time while reproducing video images, thereby reproducing the retrieved explanations on a screen. CONSTITUTION: If a user selects a desired video title set(S10), a microcomputer reads a file of the video title set information(S11). The microcomputer starts reproducing video information and audio information included in the selected file data(S12). The microcomputer decides whether an electronic dictionary retrieval function is executed(S13). If so, the microcomputer reads a caption section associated with the video and audio information(S14), and converts caption data into ASCII code data(S15). The microcomputer decides whether words having the low degree of difficulty exist in the caption section(S16). If so, the microcomputer skips the corresponding words(S17), and extracts explanation information data on all words(S18). The microcomputer reproduces the explanation information data in the second video screen area(S19), and decides whether a key for cancelling the electronic dictionary retrieval function is inputted(S20). If so, the microcomputer cancels the function and performs a normal reproduction process for the video and audio information(S21).
