PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the deceleration performance of an engine equipped with a variable compression ratio mechanism while restraining a transient torque rise at the time of deceleration. SOLUTION: A target compression ratio and a first target intake fresh air amount are calculated on the basis of an engine running state (S1 to S3), and an intake fresh air correction amount is calculated on the basis of the target compression ratio and an actual compression ratio, while the compression ratio is being controlled (S4, S5). A second target intake fresh air amount is calculated by correcting the first target intake fresh air amount with the intake fresh gas correction amount (S6) and a target throttle opening is calculated from the second target intake fresh air amount and engine speed to control a throttle valve so as to obtain the opening.
