1,250,023. Electroluminescence. XEROX CORP. 19 Dec., 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 60364/68. Heading C4S. A solid state storage device comprises a plurality of insulated electrodes 30 on a substrate 24 with overlying layers of electroluminescent and field effect semi-conductor material 32, 34 and means for extinguishing luminescence including a transparent dielectric layer 36 and a conductor 38 connected to a potential source. A flat storage panel comprises a plurality of wires coated with an insulating resin (not shown) part of which is removed. The wires are etched to form recesses within the resin coating which are filled with e.l. material. The wires are attached to the substrate by adhesive 26, 28 and adjacent ones connected to opposite sides of a power supply. Layer 36 and a transparent conductor 38 are bonded to layer 34 using acrylic-epoxy or rubber adhesive. Applying a potential to conductor 38 raises the resistance of the f.e.s.c. layer and extinguishes the entire panel. The substrate may be in the form of a drum and layer 38 is replaced by a conductive roller. Information is placed on the drum by optical, electrographic or impact printing means at one station, read out at a station 180 degrees around the drum and erased by the roller a further 90 degrees around the drum. The substrate is of Al, glass or plastics material; the wires of Cu, Ag, Pt, brass or steel; the e.l. material of ZnS or CuCl 2 and ZnS:Mg in an epoxy binder; the f.e.s.c. material of ZnO, ZnO:Zn mixture, CdS, CdO, CdSe, Si, Ge, ZnS or PbO; the dielectric of acetate or polyvinyl fluoride. Conductor 38 may be Au coated on both sides with Al or Cr with on one side further coatings of a polyester and antirefleotive MgF. Alternatively it may be conductive polyvinylbenzyl trimethyl NH 4 Cl plasticized with ethylene glycol. |
