PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To select a halftoning method preferable for a region of a document image. SOLUTION: Image data are received, a region within the image data is identified, statistic information relating to the region is collected (compiling), and the collected statistic information is used to determine at least one low level image attribute from a group of low level image attributes including dimensions, size, color distribution, luminance range and smoothness.
