<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Faraday rotator with excellent magnetic characteristics and an optical device equipped with the same in relation to the Faraday rotator and the optical device equipped with the same. <P>SOLUTION: The Faraday rotator is provided with a Bi substituted rare earth iron garnet single crystal film and two surfaces for incidence and emission of light formed on the single crystal film. The single crystal film is represented by a chemical formula Bi<SB>3-x</SB>R<SB>x</SB>Fe<SB>5-y</SB>M<SB>y</SB>O<SB>12</SB>(R is at least a kind of elements selected from rare earth elements including Y and is at least a kind of elements selected from Pb and Ca and x satisfies an inequality 1.5<x<2.5. M is at least a kind of elements selected from Ga, Al, Sc, In, Si, Ge, Ti, Pt and Mg and y satisfies an inequality 0<y<1.5). Representing the value of y on one surface out of the two surfaces as y<SB>1</SB>and the value on the other surface as y<SB>2</SB>, an inequality y<SB>2</SB>≤y<SB>1</SB>≤2y<SB>2</SB>is made to be satisfied. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
