The present invention provides a method and a system for alternatively activating, in a data processing system, a replaceable hardware unit of a first or a second type, providing a predetermined set of functional capabilities, whereby said data processing system is being configured to all ow selectively electronically enabling of at least a subset of said functional capabilities. Initially a replaceable hardware unit is provided to the data processing system. Then, the type of the provided replaceable hardware unit gets determined. Then, if the provided replaceable hardware unit is of the first type, the subset of functional capabilities to be electronically enabl ed is determined and, subsequently, enabled. Alternatively, if said provided replaceable hardware unit is of the second type, the entire functional capabilities of said provided replaceable hardware unit are enabled, instead .
