PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism for removing foreign matter which easily removes residual toner accumulated in a brush coming in contact with residual toner on a photoreceptor. SOLUTION: In the mechanism for removing foreign matter, AC voltage (superposing voltage) superposed on positive DC voltage is applied as disturbance voltage to a conductive brush 42 in response to the instruction of a user. Thus, even though positive residual toner 61b is accumulated in the conductive brush 42, an instant voltage value (positive) applied to the conductive brush 42 is made high, so that the positive residual toner 61b is electrically removed from the conductive brush 42.
