PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head position adjusting method by which a magnetic head can be made on-track continuously for a necessary and sufficient period of time for evaluating a recording medium. SOLUTION: A head position is fixed only while a recording medium is rotated at least one round and data for test is written (step 22), the approximate number of track for recording data crossed with a magnetic head locus is specified on the basis of an output signal outputted at the time of read-out (step 24) and a first direction is specified (step 26), the magnetic head is moved forward and backward with one period per one rotation in the direction away from or nearer to the rotation center by distance of the specified approximate number multiplied by track pitch so that when the magnetic head is present in the first direction, the magnetic head is made closest to the rotation center and when the magnetic head is present in the second direction being inverse direction to the first direction, the magnetic head is most separated, and the number of crossing tracks per one rotation is reduced (step 27).
