The present invention relates to an isolated nucleic acid encoding a CaKip1 kinesin protein wherein the sequence of the isolated nucleic acid has been modified for optimal expression in an Escherichia species or other organism. Disclosed are the nucleic acids, expression vectors, transformants obtained be the transformation with the expression vectors, methods of producing the modified protein using the transformant, and methods of screening for protein modulators.
