PURPOSE: A method for transmitting a plurality of holding tones is provided to transmit holding tones corresponding to figure keys, thereby enabling a user to listen to the holding tones without feeling tedious. CONSTITUTION: Input of a holding key and a figure key is examined(10,12,14). When the holding key and the figure key are inputted, a holding tone melody is read from a memory corresponding to the inputted figure key(16). The read melody is converted to be transmitted through a telephone line(18). It is examined whether the transmission of the read holding melody is terminated(20,22). If so, a holding melody corresponding to a figure larger than the inputted figure by 1 is read and converted(24). In the middle of transmitting the holding melody, it is examined whether a holding release request signal is inputted(26,28).
