PURPOSE: A method for encoding and decoding a document is provided to reduce largely errors of recognition by compressing a recognizing character string to form a short character string, converting characters and numbers of the recognizing character string to the recognizable characters and the recognizable numbers. CONSTITUTION: A character string including characters, numbers, signs, and blanks is compressed by using a predetermined program(111-121). The characters and the numbers of the compressed character string are converted to the recognizable characters and the recognizable numbers(131). An error detection code is added to the converted character string in order to identify an error of the character string(141). The converted character string is outputted(151).
