PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a level gage for accurately and easily measuring the level of a filler in a container, and in particular, even the filling level of a catalyst in a reaction tube as slender as about 20 to 50 mm in diameter such as a multitubular catalyst-filled reactor. SOLUTION: This level gage comprises a contact switch 1 with a contact part made of a flat plate 3 on its end, a cable 4 connected to the contact switch for transmitting a contact signal while sending up or down the switch, a pulley 5 for sending up or down the cable, an encoder 7 installed with its rotary shaft shared with the pulley, and a control computer 8 for calculating the filling level from the contact signal and a pulse signal of the encoder.
