PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modified carbon nanofiber in which a synthetic resin is grafted on the surface of the fiber in the length direction, and to provide a resin composition and a coating material containing the modified carbon nanofiber . SOLUTION: The synthetic resin is grafted on carbon atoms 11 having dangling bonds DB expressed as end parts of a graphene sheet 1 and/or capping atoms 12 bonded to the dangling bonds of carbon atoms 111 on the surface of the carbon nanofiber in the length direction. The graft ratio may be 1-200%. The resin composition is obtained by dispersing the modified carbon nanofiber into a resin. The coating is obtained by dispersing the modified carbon nanofiber into a solvent in which difference between the SP value of a polymer to which the modified carbon nanofibers is bonded and the SP value of the solvent is≤1.
