An inflatable headliner system is mounted below a vehicle roof. It deforms upon an accident/impact toward vehicle occupants. In the preferred embodiment, inflatable portions (40) surround a central section (37) of an inflatable layer (35). Individual portions (40) may be separated by passageways (41). If cross bows (50) are employed in the vehicle roof structure, an embodiment utilizes inflatable portions (51) beneath the cross bows.
