A method of inducing an acrosome reaction in sperm cells by incubating said cells in a solution containing a calcium ionophore and a plantinic salt. Also claimed is a method of monitoring an acrosome reaction in sperm cells comprising incubating said cells as described above and monitoring the reaction using an anti-CD46 antibody.
