PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide austenitic stainless steel which has excellent corrosion resistance and polishability and in which manufacturing property with respect to hot forging, cold forging, machining, etc., are improved. SOLUTION: The austenitic free-cutting stainless steel has a composition consisting of, by mass,≤0.10% C, 0.20 to 1.00% Si, 0.50 to 2.00% Mn, 0.050 to 0.300% S, 10.00 to 15.00% Ni, 14.00 to 18.00% Cr, 1.00 to 3.00% Mo,≤0.020% Al, 0.0010 to 0.0080% Ca, 0.0040 to 0.012% O and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
