Brake shoe (12) and use thereof. The brake shoe (12) serves for braking a cable (10), particularly in equipment for speed limitation of a lift. It comprises a bra ke lining (14) with an overall effective surface facing the cable (10) to be braked. The brake lining (14) is displaceable into an operative position in which its overall effective surfa ce bears against the cable (10); it has at least two lining regions (14.1, 14.2, 14.3, 14.4, 14.5), wherein respectively adjacent lining regions comprise different materials. The at least two lining regions (14.1, 14.2, 14.3, 14.4, 14.5) in the operative position together be ar by the effective surfaces thereof against the cable (10) so that different effectiv e properties of the materials can be used at the same time.
