PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently and selectively converting carbon dioxide which is a global warming gas, into ethylene which is useful as a chemical raw material, in a mild condition with a low energy consumption. SOLUTION: A method for manufacturing ethylene is characterized by an electrolytic reduction of carbon dioxide with the use of a copper electrode previously coated with a cuprous halide as the cathode electrode; or by an electrolytic reduction of carbon dioxide conducted in an electrolytic solution containing copper ions and halide ions which are made to coexist, with the use of a copper electrode as the cathode electrode, while depositing the cuprous halide onto the surface of the copper electrode during the electrolysis.
