Bonding metals to polymers (I) by contacting the metal and (I) in the pres. of cpds. which can react to form an aldehyde condensation product (II), and heating the composite to form (II). Polymers (I) may be polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, ethylene/vinyl acetate, ethylene/ethyl acrylate, polyethylene, ethpropylene, polyurethane, ionomers such as ethylene/sodium methacrylate copolymers, as well as elastomeric block copolymers A-(B-A)n where A is a non-elastic block with a 2nd. order transition temp. of >25 deg.C and an av. mol. wt. of 200-100,000, and B is an elastomeric block with a glass transition temp. of 10 deg.C and an av. mol. wt. of 25,000-1,000,000, and n = 1-10. The matls. (II) are pref. (a) a formaldehyde-producing cpd. stable up to about 100 deg.C and (b) an aromatic hydroxy cpd. such as resorcinol, 1,3-dihydroxynaphthalene, etc., or a phenolic resin which can react with more formaldehyde, e.g. a novolak resin. |
