PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the effects given by stains at a light distribution reference plane, on the quality of a read image, while arranging the light distribution reference plane at the surface of a manuscript guide. SOLUTION: Prior to reading of a manuscript image, a body light distribution reference plane, arranged adjacent to a body platen glass and a light distribution reference plane arranged at the surface of an ADF manuscript guide, are read. Unsuitable reference density due to stains or dust at the ADF light distribution reference plane is filled up from neighboring pixel data, and detailed correction between adjacent pixels is conducted from light distribution information on the body light distribution reference plane having little stain. According to this arrangement, optimal sensitivity correction is conducted for each pixel. while stains at the ADF light distribution reference plane are rectified. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
