PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shutter driving device in which a light shielding plate quickly moves to a position where a predetermined optical path is intercepted and to a position where the optical path is not intercepted and stops reliably at a predetermined position, a severe damage is not caused to the whole device even when a detection means fails or an abnormality such as the short circuit of wiring occurs, or the temperature rise of the shielding plate is suppressed to the minimum, and also to provide a method of driving the shutter. SOLUTION: The shutter driving device is provided with: a shielding plate 13 which has a straight or curved recessed part 12 and which turns around a supporting axis for turning 11 and moves to a first stop position where the shielding plate intercepts the predetermined optical path and to the second stop position where the shielding plate does not intercept the optical path; and a driving member 21 having a projecting part for driving 20 engaged with the recessed part 12. The shielding plate 13 is turned by the movement of the projecting part for driving 20, and the projecting part for driving 20 moves in the way that the turning speed of the shielding plate 13 decreases as the shielding plate 13 approaches either one or both of the first stop position and the second stop position.
