The mixture is fractionally distilled in a multi-plate column to separate an overhead fraction of pure ethylbenzene, an o-xylene-rich bottom fraction and a side stream rich in m- and p-xylenes. The overhead and bottom fractions are recovered and the side stream passed to a crystallizer to separate p-xylene. The remainder of the side stream is then passed to an isomerisation stage for conversion of m-xylene to ethyl benzene and o- and p-xylenes, the isomerisation prods. being passed back to the distillation column together with additional feedstock mixture. |
