Preparation (M1) of a C4-type plant (A) with modified carbon metabolism comprises: (i) introducing into at least one plant cell an expression cassette (EC) containing a sequence (I) that encodes phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC); and (ii) regeneration to a plant that contains EC in its genome. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) (A) or their parts produced by M1; (b) Transgenic plant hybrids obtained by crossing (A); (c) Vector containing EC; (d) Host cell containing the vector; and (e) Plant cell, or its clone, transformed with the vector.
