PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent quality deterioration or breaking of an optical fiber during its manufacture by suppressing vibration in an optical fiber preform attached to a drawing tower. SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises a drawing tower 1 for an optical fiber 5, a drawing furnace 3 which is mounted on the upper part of the drawing tower and performs heat-melting and spinning of an optical fiber preform 4, a damping device 2 mounted on the drawing tower, a dummy preform 8 of the optical fiber preform attached to the drawing tower, an accelerometer 35 which detects the vibration of the dummy preform 8, a sensor such as a displacement gauge 36 and a control unit (PLC) 37 which feeds back an output of the sensor. The apparatus simulates the vibration of the optical fiber preform 4 by vibrating the dummy preform 8 and actively suppresses the vibration of the optical fiber preform 4 by the damping device 2.
