PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent tthe recording of animation data from interrupting due to the searching of an unused area by shortening the period of time for searching the unused area. SOLUTION: When a user instructs the start of initialization processing, an initialization section 106 sets a management area 301, an animation storage area 302 and a non-animation storage area 303 in a storage medium 103. To prevent a device other than a DVC 10 from randomly recording data other than moving image data in the animation storage area 302, the initialization section 106 further writes, in the management area 301, information indicating that the animation storage area 302 in a read-only area.
