Hydroperoxides of polymers of a -olefines are prepared by contacting the polymers, dissolved in or swelled by aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, with molecular oxygen or oxygen-containing gases, at between 50 and 120 DEG C. and under super-atmospheric pressure in the presence of methanol as catalyst. Polymers of olefines of general formula CH2=CHR, where R is an alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl radical, or copolymers thereof with each other, and/or ethylene and containing tertiary carbon atoms in the main chain, with a molecular weight greater than 1000, e.g. styrene, nuclear substituted methyl styrene, propylene, polybutene, poly-4-methyl-pent-1-ene, and a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, and particularly amorphous polymers obtained using organo-metallic polymerization catalysts are used, and the polymers may be isotactic or non-isotactic or mixtures thereof. The solvents used are benzene, toluene, cumene or p-cymene and the oxygen or air may be diluted with nitrogen. The hydroperoxidized polymers may be reacted with monomers such as vinyl acetate, and methyl methacrylate to prepare graft polymers, and they may be reduced, e.g. with ferrous salts, to hydroxy derivatives which may be polycondensed, e.g. by the introduction of side-chains of ethylene oxide or by cross-linking, e.g. with diisocyanates. |
