PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a personal digital assistant that can reduce a communication charge by transmitting transmission data after compression depending on a transmission data volume without requiring complicated operations of a user. SOLUTION: The personal digital assistant capable of transmitting data such as an image or an email to another device via a communication line comprises a compression/decompression conversion part 19 for compressing data and a storage part 13 for storing a cumulative communication charge as integrated communication charges for communications; and when transmitting data, compares the cumulative communication charge stored in the storage part 13 and a given amount of money so as to transmit the transmission data after automatic compression if the cumulative communication charge exceeds the given amount of money. The reduced data volume of the transmission data shortens time for data transmission and thus communication time to reduce a communication charge. Packet communication can also handle smaller packets in data transmission to select a packet charge corresponding to a smaller packet and reduce a communication charge. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
