<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ignition diagnosis and feedback control system to use the ionization current feedback in an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: The ignition parameters for the next generation "smart" ignition system control such as the primary charge timing, the primary charge duration, the ignition/spark timing, and the ignition/spark duration are monitored by using the ionization signal from an ionization detection circuit. In addition, carbon fouling of a spark plug and overheat of a plug insulator are detected by using the ionization signal.
