Residual water is biologically purified by passing it as an ascending stream through a reactor or filter with a lower fluidised bed of lighter expanded material and an upper fixed bed of smaller and still lighter material, and passing oxygen-contg. gas with the water in co-current. A reactor or filter for carrying out the process is also claimed.
