The road information system indicates to the driver the nature of road segments (101-108) ahead and the distance to each segment (112-118). The position of the vehicle is determined, e.g. by a GPS system, and information on road segments ahead fetched for display in the vehicle. The display indicates how many lanes in each road segment, and road signs ahead (122-128) with the distance (131-138) to each.
