A shredding device has a housing , a feed slot, a shredding cutter (52,54) as well as a shredding gap (56) between both shredding knives (52,54). A central switch (50) is arranged over a central section of the shredding gap for ascertaining the medium and correspondingly switching on the shredding unit (48). A lateral switch (58) is arranged between the central section and one end of the shredding gap (56) and is arranged and designed together with the central switch (50) so that a medium inserted into the feed slot which is wider than one half of the length of the shredding gap (56) actuates the central switch (50) for switching on the shredding unit (48) and the medium inserted in the feed slot which is narrower that half the length of the shedding gap (56) actuates the lateral switch (58) for switching on the shredding unit (48).
