1,245,670. Fibrillated sheet. CHEVRON RESEARCH CO. 1 May, 1969 [3 May, 1968], No. 22336/69. Heading D1R. A regular fibrous web is formed by feeding a uniaxially oriented polymer film 13 under a controlled tension e.g. 600-3000 p.s.i. between the rotating surfaces of a driven toothed roller 11 having parallel helical rows of substantially equidistant teeth 14 and a driven presser roller 12 having helical grooves 15 which mate with the rows of teeth. The film is fed at an angle α such that it contacts the surface of the latter roller before that of the former and is supported on the presser roller surface. The rollers rotate synchronously in opposite directions at a peripheral speed 1.5-20 times greater than the film speed thus forcing the teeth 14 through the film 13 info the grooves 15 to cut slits in the film. The resulting fibrillated film is withdrawn at such an angle # that the film remains in contact with the surface of the presser roller 12 until after the teeth 14 have disengaged the film. The film may be made of polyolefine, polyesters or polyamides.
|
