PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a luminance signal and chrominance signal separating apparatus with less deterioration in the resolution capable of suppressing occurrence of chrominance disturbance. SOLUTION: An adder 31, multipliers 36, 37, and an adder 38 compose a vertical correlation type YC separating apparatus, and an adder 32, the multipliers 36, 37, and the adder 38 compose a horizontal correlation type YC separating apparatus. A singular point detection section 40 detects a degree of vertical correlation to generate singular point informationα. An adaptive mixer 35 adaptively mixes outputs of the adders 31, 32 in response to the singular point informationα. Any of a state of using only the vertical correlation type YC separating apparatus, a state of using only the horizontal correlation type YC separating apparatus, and a state of using the both is selected according to the result above.
