Association of Type II diabetes and a locus on chromosome 5q35 is disclosed. In particular, the gene SLIT-3 within this locus is shown by linkage analysi s to be a susceptibility gene for Type II diabetes. Pathway targeting for drug delivery and diagnosis applications in identifying those have Type II diabet es or at risk of developing Type II diabetes, in particular those that are non- obese are described.
