The motor vehicle has a drive engine, a frictional clutch and a hydrostatic wheel drive. The method involves controlling the wheel torque at the wheel drive from a gearbox controller. The controller slowly increases the torque and hence causes the vehicle to creep if it is detected that a starting gear is selected, the clutch is disengaged, the brake system is not being operated and the gas pedal is not being operated. The motor vehicle has a drive engine (2), a frictional clutch (4) between the engine and a gear shift gearbox (6) and a hydrostatic wheel drive (32,38). The method involves controlling the wheel torque at the wheel drive from a gearbox controller (52). The controller slowly increases the torque and hence causes the vehicle to creep if it is detected that a starting gear is selected, the clutch is disengaged, the working brakes (56) are not being operated and the gas pedal (60) is not being operated.
