The circuit has a sampling unit for sampling the data signal within a clock period of a received clock signal to generate multiple phase-bit-streams synchronous with the receiver clock. An evaluation unit determines a best fit of a data sequence matching the data of the data signal by evaluating correlation characteristics of the generated synchronous phase-bit-streams, and outputs the data sequence. An Independent claim is included for a method of extracting data from a serial data signal.
