PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce noises by preventing a joint turning of a spinning tub by increasing the braking force by a brake lever when washing, in a drive device for a washing machine which applies braking to a brake wheel being fitted on a dehydrating shaft by an electromagnetic drive device. SOLUTION: The brake wheel 10 is fitted on the dehydrating shaft which is connected with the spinning tub, and a brake band 11 is concentrically arranged in the outer y of the brake wheel 10. When washing, the brake band 11 is closely joined to the brake wheel 10 by a brake spring 22, and when dehydrating and draining, the wheel band is placed under an open state. The brake lever 20 which is arranged on the brake band 11 is made freely turnable through a cock rod 31 by the electromagnetic drive device 29. The electromagnetic drive device 29 incorporates a drive motor 32 which moves a motion lever 30 which is connected with the cock rod 31 when being turned off axially. Then, the electromagnetic drive device 29 is constituted in such a manner that a pressing force is applied by bringing the motion lever 30 into contact with the brake lever 20 by the drive motor 32 under a turned off state when washing.
