This invention relates to a process for converting petrochemical synthesis reaction organic by-products and residues containing spent catalytic materials into substantially stable compounds. In particular, this invention relates to converting by-products containing spent catalytic material from the catalytic formation of terephthalic acid into substantially stable compounds wherein at least part of the converted material may be recycled into fresh catalytic materials.
