PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new polyether derivative useful for chemical modification of microcapsules and physiologically active proteins and chemical modification, etc., of a drug delivery system and to provide a method for advantageously producing the derivative. SOLUTION: The polyether derivative is represented by general formula (I) [wherein X<SP>1</SP>is -CO- or -SO<SB>2</SB>-; Ar<SP>1</SP>is an unsubstituted arylene or an arylene substituted with a halogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, an alkynyl group, an alkoxy group, an alkoxycarbonyl group, an aryloxycarbonyl group or a cyano group; L is an alkylene; m is 1 or 2; A is -X<SP>2</SP>-Ar<SP>2</SP>-(NH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>l</SB>, a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group or an acyl group; X<SP>2</SP>, Ar<SP>2</SP>and l are respectively the same as X<SP>1</SP>, Ar<SP>1</SP>and m; n is 10-500 being the average addition mol number of polyether group].
