Dyeing human keratinic fibers comprises applying a composition containing one or more direct dyes selected from arylmethane, cationic azo, methine, azomethine and azine dyes, maintaining the composition in contact with the fibers for less than 5 minutes, and rinsing the fibers. The CIELAB color produced on 90% natural gray hair in 4 minutes at 27 +/- 5 degrees C using a bath ratio of 10 has a L asterisk value below 40 and/or a C asterisk value above 20. An Independent claim is also included for removing the color from keratinic fibers dyed as above by contact with oxidizing or reducing agents for less than 5 minutes. |
