Protective container with preventative agent therein

A protective container (21) comprises a durable outer case (22); a less durable inner case containing a material having an adverse characteristic; and a layer of preventative agent disposed between the inner and outer cases to normalize the adverse characteristic. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a portable fuel cell comprising a protective outer case; a protective inner case forming a chamber and operably received within the outer case; a proton exchange structure operably engaging a fuel having hydrogen and a source of oxygen to produce electricity, water and heat; a fuel chamber operably received within the protective outer case for storing fuel; a fuel path from the fuel chamber to the proton exchange structure; and a layer of preventative agent between the inner and outer cases to normalize adverse operating characteristic(s) of the fuel cell; and (2) a method for neutralizing harmful effects of producing electricity with a fuel cell by encasing a fuel cell component having a potentially harmful effect in an internal chamber; encasing the internal chamber into an outer protective case; and depositing neutralizing material between the internal chamber and the protective case such that release of harmful effects from the component is neutralized.
