The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0870541/IV (b)/1> in which R represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl radical, and acid addition salts thereof, and the preparation thereof by reducing compounds of the formula: <FORM:0870541/IV (b)/2> and, if desired, converting the products into their acid addition salts. The products may be resolved into their optical isomers. Pharmaceutical compositions containing the products have utility as anorexigenic agents. 1-Trifluoromethylphenyl-2-nitro-alkenes are prepared by condensing trifluoromethylbenzaldehydes with nitroalkanes. Trifluoromethylbenzaldehydes are prepared by treating trifluoromethylphenyl magnesium bromides with trialkyl orthoformates.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions containing compounds of the formula <FORM:0870541/VI/1> in which R represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, or acid addition salts thereof, may be in the form of tablets, hard and soft capsules, troches, lozenges or liquid suspensions. Specified salts are those with maleic, fumaric, benzoic, ascorbic, pamoic, succinic, bismethylsalicylic, methanesulphonic, ethanedisulphonic, acetic, propionic, tartaric, salicylic, citric, gluconic, lactic, malic, mandelic, cinnamic, citraconic, aspartic, stearic, palmitic, itaconic, glycolic, p-aminobenzoic acid, glutamic, benzene sulphonic and theophylline acetic acids and also with 8-halotheophyllines.
