<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display in which coloring phenomenon depending on the viewing angle is effectively improved and a high-quality image can be displayed. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display includes: a liquid crystal element 1 having a liquid crystal layer 8 sealed between a pair of electrode substrates 6, 7; a pair of polarizers 4, 5 disposed in each side of the element; and at least one of optical retardation plates 2, 3 disposed between the liquid crystal element 1 and the polarizer, with the retardation plate having negative refractive index anisotropy with the direction of the principal refractive index n<SB>b</SB>parallel to the normal direction of the surface and the direction of the principal refractive index n<SB>c</SB>or n<SB>a</SB>in the surface being inclined clockwise or counterclockwise around the direction of the principal refractive index n<SB>a</SB>or n<SB>c</SB>in the surface plane. The voltage to be applied for white gradation is determined so as to obtain the transmittance in the range of ≥90% and ≤97% of the transmittance obtained when no voltage is applied on the liquid crystal. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
