PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device in which a transient voltage to work at the time of shortage of a circuit voltage is prepared and which maintains a stable light control state. SOLUTION: This device is provided with an auxiliary capacitor 20 to be connected between output terminals of rectifier type power supply circuit 10, and a serial pair of switching elements to be controlled so as to make on and off alternately, and a first open circuit including a first switching element 31 and an AC load circuit 50 and a second closed circuit including a second switching element 32 and the AC load circuit 50 are formed. The first open circuit and the second closed circuit are made to be circuits including main capacitors, and a first inductor 61 belonging to the first open circuit and not belonging to second closed circuit is provided, and a second inductor 62 belonging to the second closed circuit and not belonging to the first open circuit is provided. The first and the second inductors are elements having different inductance values. A polarized charge is brought about and the light is controlled by imbalance of the first and the second inductors. A part of electromagnetic energy accumulated in the first and the second inductors returns to the auxiliary capacitor 20, and an appropriate high voltage is formed.
