A method for severing glass by forming an initiation crack with a laser beam and subsequent severing, characterized in that the crack is formed in a glass article side by alternate/reciprocal motion of the beam with its partial volumetric absorption. 2. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that the crack is initiated by beam penetration into the article body along the desired cutting line to a distance equal to 2 to 4 of the beam diameter, instant fixation of the beam in this point and getting back to the glass side.
