PURPOSE: A speaker system for a portable computer and a method for operating the same are provided to use at least two speakers in stereo by embedding three speakers into the portable computer. CONSTITUTION: The first and the second speaker(161,162) are joined to a speaker frame(160) to a lower inside of a front and a rear cover. The first and the second speaker are respectively installed to a left/right side of the speaker frame. A microphone and an earphone jack(164) are installed to a center of the speaker frame. In case of a portrait mode, the first and the second speaker are used in the stereo. The third speaker(163) is installed to a right inside of the front and the rear cover. When a screen mode is changed, the second speaker is used as a right speaker and the third speaker is used as a left speaker by linking with the second speaker.
