PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing mevalolactone by oxidizing 3-methylpentane-1, 3, 5-triol with hydrogen peroxide without using a phase transfer catalyst with no complicated operation such as pH adjustment. SOLUTION: This production method for the mevalolactone comprises reacting the 3-methylpentane-1, 3, 5-triol with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a specific tungsten oxide catalyst. This catalyst is obtained by reacting hydrogen peroxide with tungsten metal or with a tungsten compound comprising tungsten and an element selected from the group consisting of group IIIb elements, group IVb elements, group Vb elements, and group VIb elements except oxygen.
