<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic pattern display element which shortens pattern matching time, improves image resolution and deals with a large quantity of data and complicated patterns, and also to provide a pattern matching device and method using the magnetic pattern display element. <P>SOLUTION: The pattern matching device comprises a light source, a polarizer for converting light from the light source into straight polarized light, a magnetic pattern display element, an analyzer for analyzing transmitted light from the magnetic pattern display element, a CCD camera for receiving light from the analyzer, and a signal processing means for processing a signal from the CCD camera.
